Mesothelioma is a rare disease and it can be difficult
to treat, you may be treated by a team of several
cancer doctors rather that a single doctor. If you have pleural
mesothelioma, for example, you may be treated by an
centers oncologist or cancer specialist; a thoracic surgeon, who
specializes in surgery in the chest; and a pulmonologist,
who specializes in lung treatment.
When you choose a doctor, you may be limited to doctors
who are associated with your medical plan. If this is
so, your medical insurance provider will provide a list
of doctors who can treat you under the plan. (Most
providers have a web site where this information is
available.) While there is no certification board for
mesothelioma specifically, there are board-certified
oncologists who specialize in treating mesothelioma.
Generally, insurance providers will pass on any
information from individual doctors about the kinds of
patients they treat.
